Role Description

The Engagement Manager will have primary responsibility for managing daily client interaction, workflow, timelines and deliverables. This team member will serve as a bridge between internal and external work, help make processes and structures work, and ensure the whole team is moving in lockstep.  This is an ideal position for someone who has excellent people skills, a love of structure, and who is detail oriented but does not miss the big picture. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Lead day-to-day execution of client engagements;

  • Scope and manage work-streams, closely manage progress against objectives, highlighting roadblocks as soon as they arise and taking full personal ownership for high-quality, timely execution of deliverables;

  • Gather and analyze information, formulate and test hypotheses, translate research into recommendations for client presentations;

  • Draft project deliverables, including client presentations, memos, and final deliverables;

  • Lead weekly problem-solving sessions to align on client work planning, facilitate decision-making, iterate on solutions and find work-arounds as needed (both internal and with clients);

  • Support the ongoing growth and success of Tembo, including business development and proposal writing;

  • Expand a growing internal database of consulting tools, templates, research, and case studies; and

  • Coach and support junior members of the team.

About you

  • You have between 6-8 years’ experience, with at least 3 years in strategy consulting, ideally from a top tier management consulting practice or top tier agency;

  • You have experience working on, and are passionate about, social impact, international development and progressive issues, and have had success building and/or contributing to campaigns or organizations that drive social impact;

  • You thrive in complexity, are a natural problem-solver with an entrepreneurial sensibility ,and dig deep for patterns and paths, even amidst a great deal of ambiguity;

  • You love structure, organization, and are detail oriented, but you never miss the big picture;

  • You have a ‘no task too small’ mentality and know how to collaborate effectively with a small, fast-paced team;

  • You are comfortable developing project scopes and deliverables in industries and project areas you don’t necessarily have deep expertise in;

  • You have exceptional analytical skills, and are capable of managing and making progress against multiple simultaneous demands in short time frames without a lot of supervision;

  • You’re a storyteller, lead with empathy and imagination, and have a history of building strong trusted relationships with clients and other team members;

  • You have a confident presence and strong writing, communication and presentation skills, and ability to communicate effectively, including with senior leaders;

  • You enjoy the variety and sometimes-chaos of managing a wide range of client projects from “tip to tail";

  • You have a high level of proficiency with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint;

  • Bachelor’s degree; MBA, MFA or other advanced studies desirable.

Compensation & Structure

At Tembo, we believe in a model of apprenticeship. This role will be structured as a one-year, full-time contract, with an opportunity to come on board as a full time employee at the end of the first year.
